Go to the Salish Sea Tidal Current Atlas page for more details and the download links
This new tidal current atlas is similar to and leverages knowledge and familiarity with the original DFO Current Atlas (1984), but utilizes a newer and higher resolution tidal model. The new tidal current atlas also covers more regions of the Salish Sea, including the Gulf and San Juan Islands ( Volume 1), Puget Sound (Volume 2), the North Strait of Georgia (Volume 3), and the Discovery and Broughton Islands (Volume 4). Volume 5 (West Coast Vancouver Island) is delayed while I assess the accuracy of the tidal model in this region.

Mooring Design and Dynamics: This link takes you to my Matlab Mooring Design and Dynamics software package pages (Overview, Users Guide, and File Download). This toolbox provides a simple GUI to build and test taut wire oceanographic moorings under the influence of variable current profiles. It also includes a library of mooring components providing the ability to build and test the state of an oceanographic mooring or a towed oceanographic package. It is free, but you do need Matlab pre-installed. To download the software, please visit Mooring Design and Dynamics via Github.
Tidal Current Predictions for Up-Coming RVYC Hosted Regattas (2026)
These PDF tidal current maps for the Oak Bay and Dallas Road regions have been generated using the tidal model of Foreman et al (2004) for the general information of regatta management and sailors. While tidal heights for Oak Bay or Victoria might seem useful, for the timing and strength of currents, use the CHS tide tables for Race Passage.

Dr. Richard Dewey is a Physical Oceanographer, recently retired from the University of Victoria. He was a founding member of the VENUS and NEPTUNE ocean observatory projects, which is now known as Ocean Networks Canada and has studied and sailed on the waters surrounding Vancouver Island for most of his life. This site primarily provides access to Richard Dewey's self published material, including various tidal current products and oceanographic mooring design software. Dewey Oceanographic Services is a private consulting business.
